How to Plan a Last Minute Move

Ideally, if you’re going to move an entire house, you’ll need at least eight weeks to properly get everything sorted out. If you’re short on time, however, you’ll have to figure out a way to get it all done, and that can mean getting a little creative.

Fortunately, nearly everything can be settled with a little bit of planning beforehand. Here are some tips to make sure that last-minute move doesn’t come with some extra last-minute headaches

1. Hire a Mover

This is the ultimate last-minute preparations since the work will be all but done for you. While you might want to do things yourself, the price of hiring movers may be worth it since professionals are experts at transporting items quickly and efficiently. 2. Use Garbage Bags

Not only are garbage bags necessary to purge your belongings (and moving is an excellent time to do just that), they can also make handy clothes bags. The day of or the day before your move, simply wrap up all your hanging clothes in garbage bags and toss them in the truck, that way you don’t have to fold them all into boxes.

3. Call in Favors

Make sure you’ve picked a day that your friends who love you have off and ask them nicely (or beg them) to come help you move; if those friends have pickup trucks, even better. Pay them in pizza and ask them to at least spare a couple hours to move the heavy things (refrigerators, furniture, etc.), that way you’re at least only responsible for the lighter items.

4. Sort it Out

Moving is not a good time to be emotional. As you get ready to move your life, try your hardest to separate it out into three piles: keep, donate, or throw away. Be objective about how much you still want to keep at your new place, and donate what you can to a non-profit for some awesome tax benefits.

5. Buy Supplies

Yes, ideally you would have tons of old boxes laying around ready for moving day, but unless you’ve hit the side-of-the-road jackpot lately, you’re probably out of luck. Instead, head down to your local home improvement or storage depot and buy sturdy cardboard boxes. It may be a little expensive, but they’ll be reliable, and that’s all that really counts.

6. Go on a Sprint

Unless you have the stamina of a gazelle on steroids, you most likely won’t have the energy to pack for hours on end, so set the timer for 90 minutes at a time and go as hard as you can. Then, take a 15-20-minute break and start again. Not only will you get 90 minutes of solid work in, but that break will be just the reward and refreshment you need to push through another effective sprint.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can plan a move quickly with less stress. Don’t forget, our movers can help with even your last-minute moving needs. To schedule a move, call us now!
